Special Thanksto Stephen Gale of the Australian Artist Blacksmith Association, the team at Tocal Homestead and the blacksmithing workshop participants.

Forged Rhythms is a site-based immersive installation exploring the heritage blacksmithing forge at Tocal Homestead, Paterson NSW. Emerging from an observation that the sounds, sights and smells of a working forge connect with us in ways that are innate — the physicality of work, a strike of hammer on anvil, the roar of flame, and the smell of burning coal  — the project captures and reimagines these elemental forces through contemporary sound and moving image. At its heart are twin brothers Dave and Bob Skelton, blacksmiths and poets, whose words and stories form the narrative spine of the work. Forged Rhythms premieres at Peek into the Past, Tocal Homestead, on 26 July 2026.

WORKSHOPS

Over two workshop days at Tocal Homestead's historic forge, eight community participants worked alongside artist-blacksmith Will Maguire, learning traditional forging techniques and creating their own forged bells.
Filmmaker Jonathan Burrows captured the process on film, while sound artist Huw Jones recorded the acoustic world of the forge — the strike of hammer on anvil, the breath of the bellows, the hiss of quenching steel. The sounds of the bells forged during the workshops have been recorded by Huw and form part of the final soundscape.
Visiting blacksmith Steve Gale also contributed his considerable expertise, driving from Wauchope to lend his skills to the project. The workshops were sold out with a waiting list — a testament to the community's appetite for connection with this living craft tradition.

THE TEAM

Jonathan Burrows

Jonathan Burrows (fondly known as The Pretty Amazing Jono) is a highly versatile Australian filmmaker, multimedia content producer, artist and performer known for his vibrant storytelling and captivating imagery. His work spans from commercial promotions to immersive digital art, allowing him to capture the atmospheric energy of human creation with a distinctly cinematic eye. For the Forged Rhythms project at Tocal Homestead, his lens documents the visceral dance between heat and heavy iron, translating the physical power of blacksmithing into a fluid moving-image archive.

Will Maguire

Will Maguire is an award-winning contemporary blacksmith and sculptor celebrated for translating traditional ironworking into expressive fine art. For the Forged Rhythms project, Will led the community blacksmithing workshops at the historic Tocal forge, guiding participants as they hand-crafted the bells that form a part of the project's audio world. In addition to mentoring local makers, Will is contributing to the design of the distinct installation aesthetic for the Homestead’s historic Milk Room.

Huw Jones

Huw Jones is an innovative contemporary sound artist, composer, and audio engineer dedicated to capturing the hidden acoustic textures of our physical environment. Known for his immersive field recordings and evocative sonic landscapes, he transforms everyday raw noise into powerful musical art installations. For Forged Rhythms, Huw captures the resonant clangs, the roar of the forge fire, and the ambient rhythms of the historic homestead, weaving these industrial frequencies into a striking, atmospheric soundtrack that brings the physical metalwork to life.

Suzannah Jones

Suzannah Jones is an adaptable multi-disciplinary artist and creative producer with a keen interest in community-based arts initiatives. With an extensive background that spans everything from public murals to theater productions, she enjoys connecting diverse creators and guiding collaborative visions from concept to reality. As the producer pulling Forged Rhythms together, Suzannah manages the moving parts behind the scenes....

Dave Skelton

Dave Skelton is a master blacksmith, community storyteller, and the revered keeper of Tocal Homestead’s historic forge for over thirty years. Believed to be one of the oldest living blacksmiths in Australia, Dave brings a lifetime of irreplaceable knowledge, living heritage, and localized memory to the project. At the core of Forged Rhythms, Dave serves as the vital bridge between Tocal's historic past and its contemporary future—sharing his signature craftsmanship, oral histories, and time-honoured techniques at the anvil to anchor the exhibition’s overarching story.

Bob Skelton

Bob Skelton—famously known across the Hunter region as the ‘Minmi Magster’—is a traditional blacksmith’s striker, celebrated bush poet, and a living legend of the local community. Alongside his twin brother Dave, Bob stands as one of Australia's oldest heritage forge practitioners, dedicated to keeping historic metalwork traditions alive. For Forged Rhythms, Bob weaves together his dual passions of verse and iron; his rhythmic sledgehammer strikes and a lifetime of bush poetry provide a profound lyrical and physical voice that perfectly encapsulates the human storytelling element of the installation.
